5th International Vajrayana Conference, Thimphu, Bhutan
The fifth International Vajrayana Conference started on 02 June, 2025 with the Dorji Lopen of the Central Monastic Body leading a meditation session. Her Majesty Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck accompanied by Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck and Vairochana Rinpoche, graced the event in Thimphu. The theme this year is “Science, Mindfulness, and Meditation.”
The Director General of the International Buddhist Confederation, Mr. Abhijit Halder, concluded the day's proceedings with remarks on the relevance of the Dhamma and mindful meditation. He noted that there could be no better place than Bhutan to host the conference, as Bhutan is renowned for its concept of Gross National Happiness. Happiness, the DG stated, “is a state of mind,” which we all strive to attain through meditation, mindfulness, and scientific approaches. He also briefed the audience on the tremendous response the holy relics from Sarnath received during their one-month exposition in Vietnam.
Second day of 5th Vajrayana Conference 2025 in Thimphu, Bhutan, Mr. Abhijit Halder, Director General of the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), had the honour of meeting with His Eminence Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche. During their meeting, they engaged in a meaningful discussion on a range of topics, particularly focusing on the spreading and impact of Buddha Dhamma in Western countries. The conversation highlighted the growing relevance of Buddhist philosophy, Meditation and mindfulness practices in contemporary Western societies, and the importance of spiritual dialogue in fostering global peace and understanding. Following the insightful exchange, Mr. Halder presented souvenirs to His Eminence as a gesture of respect and gratitude.
After the conclusion of the Second day of the 5th International Vajrayana conference in Thimphu, Bhutan the Director General, International Buddhist Confederation led a delegation of Indian representatives to the Conference from different parts of the country to meet with the Ambassador of India to Bhutan Shri Sudhakar Dalela at his residence. During the interaction, the DG of IBC and Ambassador Dalela held discussions on several key initiatives undertaken by the IBC, particularly those promoting cultural and spiritual collaboration between India and Bhutan. The meeting also highlighted the shared Buddhist heritage and strong people-to-people ties between the two nations. Bhutan recognizes Buddha Dhamma (Buddhism) as its state religion, with approximately 75% of the Bhutanese population practicing it. This shared religious and cultural background serves as a strong foundation for continued cooperation in the field of Buddhist diplomacy and heritage preservation.
