The last rites of the deceased Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter, the Most Venerable Galagama Sri Attadassi Thera, was held on Sunday at the Asgiriya Police Grounds in Kandy at Sri Lanka.
The funeral of Mahanayake of Asgiri Chapter Most Venerable Galagama Sri Attadassi Thera took place with full state honours.
International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) in its condolence message has termed the demise of Most Venerable Galagama Sri Attadassi Thera, as big loss to the Buddhist world.
Most Venerable Galagagama Sri Attadassi Thera past away last Wednesday following a sudden illness. Thousands of people came to pay their last respects to the Late Venerable Mahanayaka Thera whose remains were lying at state at Powera Upali Hall of Asgiri Maha Viharaya.
President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe paid their last respects to the late Mahanayaka Thera this morning.
The funeral procession was commenced from Asgiri Viharaya at 12.00 noon, and came to Police Grounds through Asgiri Vihara Mawatha, D.S. Senanayke Veediya and Dalada Veediya.
The religious rites of the funeral were performed by Anunayaka of Asgiri Viharaya, Chief Incumbent of Badullu Muthiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya, Venerable Warakagoda Pannarathana Thera.
Thereafter delivering a special Anusasana, Anunayaka of Malwatta Chapter Venerable Viyangoda Vijithasiri Thera said that many examples can be learnt from the life of Late Mahanayaka Thera.
Condolence messages of foreign Clergy were presented at the ceremony.
Addressing the funeral ceremony President Maithripala Sirisena said that late Venerable Mahanayaka Thera was an exemplary character not only for Buddhists but also followers of other religions.
Venerable Urulewatte Dhammarakhita Thera of Asgiri Maha Viharaya who is also a senior student of Late Venerable Galagama Sri Attadassi conducted the final religious activities.
The Maha Sangha of three Nikayas, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Public Representatives, Foreign Diplomats, Diyawadana Nileme – Nilanga Dela, Basnayake Nilames and thousands of people attended the funeral ceremony
. The funeral pyre was lit following a Gun Salute. Flowers were scattered from air as an honor to the Late Mahanayaka Thera.
